Elexon collects load profile data to represent the electricity consumption patterns of typical customers across profile classes 1 to 4, which include households and some businesses.
We create new profiling outputs every six months using sample data from the corresponding period for the previous three years.
In order to do this we appoint a profiling administrator to collect sample data from Elexon-owned Half Hourly meters fitted in households. We also collect submissions of profiling data directly from Suppliers.
Using profiled data to determine half hourly consumption
We use sample data to determine the profile of non-half hourly consumption. After we complete data sampling and analysis, we produce regression co-efficients (which are used to make calculations including the profile coefficients for each profile class). This information is made available in our Market Domain Data (MDD) and it is also used in non-half hourly Settlement calculations by industry.
We calculate imbalance Settlement for each 30 minute period of the electricity day. The profiling of consumption has been necessary because until the roll out of smart meters, most meters used in homes and smaller businesses did not record and relay consumption data to Suppliers every 30 minutes.
Moving to half hourly Settlement removes need for profiled data
The transition to market-wide half hourly Settlement and use of smart meters will remove the need for profiling. Use of actual (rather than profiled) consumption data will increase the accuracy of Settlement for BSC Parties.
Existing the contract with the Profile Administrator
At is September meeting, the BSC Panel agreed that Elexon can exit the contract with the Profiling Administrator and remove the Elexon-owned meters from households.
This is a landmark moment as profiled data has been used in Settlement since the BSC was established almost 25 years ago. We would like to thank Suppliers for their contribution to the Profile Administration Service to date, alongside people who agreed to hosting the Elexon-owned meters in their homes.
Suppliers no longer need to make sampling data submissions
As a result of the Panel’s decision, Suppliers will no longer need to make data submissions under BSCP510 ‘The Provision of Sampling Data to the Profile Administrator’. Therefore payments by the Profile Administrator to Suppliers for this data will cease with final payments being made in November/December 2024.
