Flexibility markets are where flexibility services are bought and sold across Great Britain.

They help the grid by enabling quick adjustments in power generation and use. This flexibility is increasingly important as the UK relies more on variable renewable energy like wind and solar.

Current markets in operation include:

  • local markets run by Distribution Network Operators (DNOs)
  • National Balancing Mechanism (BM) services
  • ancillary services that support system stability

Catalogue of current markets

Our Flexibility Market Catalogue will be a single source of information on how the various local and national flexibility markets work across Great Britain.

It will list the services available in Great Britain (defined as ‘Sub-Markets’) and set out how they operate. This includes key information on eligibility, timescales at which they operate, how you will get paid and the key platforms in use.

When is it available?

The Flexibilty Market Rules will come into force on 6 February, at which point we will collate the available market data and look to publish the Flexibility Market Catalogue within a week of receiving it.

The catalogue will be updated within 5 working days of accepted data being submitted.

In the meantime, this list shows the various sub-markets we expect to receive data on:
