Glossary Term: Secretary of State
The title Secretary of State is typically held by Cabinet Ministers in charge of Government Departments. The principal objective of the Secretary of State and the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (in the Act referred to as “the Authority”) in carrying out their respective functions under this Part is to protect the interests of existing and future consumers in relation to electricity conveyed by distribution systems or transmission systems.

The BSC references the Electricity Act 1989 using phrases such as “in accordance with the Act” or “under section 6 of the Act, as modified from time to time in accordance with the Act”. It should be noted that there have been further amendments to the original Act.
