Glossary Term: Reactive Power

Reactive power services are how voltage levels on the grid remain within a given range, as mandated in the Security and Quality of Supply Standard (SQSS). Generators or other asset owners are instructed to either absorb reactive power (decreasing voltage) or generate reactive power (increasing voltage). This is the product of voltage and current and is measured in units of voltamperes.

BSC defined definition

The product of voltage and current and the sine of the phase angle between them, measured in units of voltamperes reactive and standard multiples thereof.
